With change comes challenge
What’s the one thing I’d never want to miss in my job? Constant change. Royal Van der Leun is always exploring new industries and technologies, which keeps my work exciting and allows me to learn something new every day.

Learning While Achieving Great Results
There’s always a challenging project to take on. And I’m not just talking about ultra-luxurious private yachts—we also build ships that help clean the ocean. These are projects that have a real impact on the world. I’m incredibly impressed by what I can accomplish here, and that makes me truly proud.
I also get the opportunity to work on projects that are completely new to me. Right now, I’m working on my first large yacht. I’m involved from the initial concept development all the way to delivery. Normally, I work on ferries, which follow entirely different regulations. That makes this project both exciting and a bit nerve-wracking, as I have to make critical decisions. But it also makes me really happy. It keeps my work diverse and broadens my expertise. I can’t wait to see the yacht set sail in over a year. It’s an amazing feeling to witness the final result of your work in such a tangible way.
Differences as Strengths
When I come across something I don’t know—like in this yacht project—I can always ask for help. I learn a lot from my colleagues, and they learn from me in return. We all come from different cultural backgrounds, and I see that everyone approaches problems in their own unique way. Because we’re so different, we actually complement each other really well. That’s not only great for teamwork but also for my personal growth and expanding my expertise.
Appreciation for Personal Ideas
The diversity among my colleagues has another major advantage: as a female engineer, I can completely be myself here. I am valued for my knowledge and skills, and I truly feel that appreciation.
A great example of this is when our company transitioned from 2D to 3D drawings for electrical installations. I was given the responsibility to lead this transition. My colleagues were incredibly happy with the improvements I introduced, and that might be one of my proudest achievements at Royal Van der Leun so far. By sharing my ideas and expertise, I’ve helped make my colleagues’ work easier and more efficient.
